Cllr Len Horwood, Chairman of Mental Health ResourceCllr Len Horwood

Mental Health Resource is deeply sad to announce that our Chairman, Len Horwood passed away early on Saturday morning after complications following major heart surgery.

Len was born in Rickmansworth Hertfordshire in 1948 and named after the great Len Hutton, which boded well for his later great interest in both playing and watching cricket.

When he left school Len went to work in the transport industry where he worked for a variety of organisations and businesses until he left in 1997 to start his VAT consultancy practice.

He meet his wife Judy on holiday in Ireland in 1970, and in 1971. Len and Judy moved to Tunbridge Wells, living first in Sherwood and then moving to Farmcombe Road in 1983.

Len was a keen sports fan, supporting Chelsea Football Club and being a member of both Middlesex and Kent Cricket Clubs.  He played golf at Sweetwoods, and was a member of The Grove Bowling Club. He also enjoyed watching almost any sporting event from Athletics to Snooker. He belonged to St Augustine’s Church, and was on the Board of Trinity Arts Centre. He was also a governor of Claremont School and joint Chairman of his local Residents’ Association.

Len had represented the Pantiles & St. Mark’s Ward as a Borough Councillor since 1992.  During his 25 years as a Borough Councillor he had been Leader of the Council, portfolio holder for Finance, Chaired the Audit Committee and was Mayor of the Borough of Tunbridge Wells 2018-2019.

Len always gave our staff, volunteers and clients a huge amount of support and encouragement. Despite several health problems in recent years, he remained active in his role as Chairman and would continue to attend fundraising events and board meetings.
We will always be incredibly grateful to Len for helping to grow this charity to an organisation that now supports over 1000 people evey year. He was a hugely inspiring man and he was determined to make access to mental health support easier in our community.
Our thoughts are with his wondeful wife, Judy, at this time.

Thank you for everything Len,

Rest in Peace.
